I’ve always been a lover of sleek form. When I was younger, I used to visit a local dock where wooden hulled fishing boats were lifted on gantries to have their hulls scraped cleaned of barnacles then re-painting before being set back on the sea.
There was something about the voluptuous, bulbousness off the boats bellies. I loved the functionality of the hull shapes counterpointed against their somewhat clumsy size, yet together they evoked such joy and appreciation within me.
The Great White shark emits similar emotions for me, they are so perfectly formed. The seeming cruelty of their indifference to life against such perfectly robust and aerodynamic proportions. Such a maligned creature. We enter their domain and vilify them.
I painted this fellow with soft washes of acrylic before meticulously shading the detail in coloured pencil, using the grain of the paper to add the texture of the shark’s coarse flesh.
